Powerful women in entertainment like Julia Roberts continue to soar in new gigs and popularity with the latest announcement coming from Amazon.
According to Variety, it’s a two-season pickup for a drama series starring the Pretty Woman. Amazon Studios will have global rights to Homecoming, which will premiere world-wide exclusively on Amazon Prime Video. Streaming services like Amazon have the big money to attract high-profile stars like Oscar winner Julia Roberts, and she is, perhaps, one of their most famous faces and names in the industry to come on board.
The series has been described as a political and psychological thriller focusing on three people, a caseworker at a secret government facility, her supervisor and a soldier. Roberts is in negotiations to play the government caseworker. The fictional podcast was written by Sam Esmail, the creator of Mr. Robot.
The 30-minute TV series is a big deal for Roberts because she’s been away from the Hollywood cameras for quite some time now, only making brief guest appearances. Homecoming is the actress’ first starring TV series role, and that’s not all.
Roberts has been named executive producer of Homecoming through RedOm, her production company. Partners Lisa Gillan and Marisa Gill have been tapped as co-executive producers.
Roberts is expanding her brand in another television series under development at HBO. The limited miniseries is called Today Will Be Different, which is the adaptation from the bestselling novel by Maria Semple. Roberts will co-produce the series.
Major female stars like Roberts continue to act in select movies but have chosen the small screen for variety and newness in Peak TV. Actresses like Annette Bening and Penelope Cruz have turned to television for work and renewed popularity.
